Several years ago, while on tour of the Daintree Rainforest,  I
experienced the beauty of the world's oldest living rainforest and
learnt about an Aboriginal woman – an Elder - I would never meet who
held the secrets of the ancient plants in her native language.

I learnt that her knowledge could only be passed on to another
woman of her culture who spoke the same native language but, as the last
surviving speaker of her country, the secrets of the plants, her
language, and her culture would be lost when she passed.

As a child of migrant parents, I knew the value of language to
connect people to their culture, identity and family. The idea of losing
this was unthinkable and I decided to find a way to help preserve
aboriginal languages and culture, and retain precious knowledge.

A year later my mother passed away. While she had dealt with
failing health in her later years, she had always been blessed with
beautiful clear  skin. She took great joy in the praise she received for
her flawless skin and freely shared her simple skincare routine. In my
mother's passing, I found myself thinking about the Aboriginal woman of
the Daintree Rainforest and the impact that loss of language and culture
has on identity. 

In a radical move, I quit my executive job and created Urban
